A young Western Tanager has appeared in the park. It does appear in Sibley’s range maps as a rare visitor to the east, but I think this is the first one recorded in Central Park.
Thanks to a posting by Jack Meyer, pointing out Ardith Bondi’s discovery, I knew to be on the lookout for three Ring-necked Ducks. I found them sleeping on the Reservoir. They woke up after something startled a large group of gulls. This was a new species for my Central Park list.
The last set of photographs from my late December Florida trip.
The Scott’s Oriole continues in Union Square. The juvenile Red-tailed Hawk which is spending the winter in Union Square was having a great time going after pigeons and squirrels. It didn’t catch anything while I was there, but it seemed to be having fun time keeping everyone on their toes.
A bird normally found in the Southwest has appeared in Union Square! It appears to be a 1st year male. If the I.D. is correct, it will be the first recorded sighting in New York State. Needless to say, its discovery has created quite a stir among the greater New York birding community.
